Mexican Freetails

Texas is pretty well known for our Mexican Freetail Bats. There is an enormous colony in Austin underneath one of the bridges, and here in Houston we have a pretty good size colony under the Waugh Steet Bridge over Buffalo Bayou. I saw them leaving there one night back in the spring as I was driving home. It was amazingly impressive.

Here in our neighborhood, a small colony has taken up residence in a condo complex not too far from our house. We see them coming home every morning while we walk Blaze.

They are hard to photograph, but I tried:

There are hundres of bats coming home to roost. You can smell them as you walk by, you can hear their wings flapping, and you an imagine that you hear the squeaking.

It is a fun thing to see everyday.
