Baby Mockingbird in the Yard
I heard some squawking this afternoon, and soon found this baby Mockingbird in our yard.
Blaze was in the yard, too. But she was totally uninterested in the bird. Mama bird was not swooping down on Blaze, so that was a good thing. Mama (or Pappa) bird did come by to feed the baby a little later.
The baby was walking around doing the characteristic "Wing Flash" that you often see in adult Mockingbirds. This tells me that it is an inate, rather than a learned behavior. There seems to be some controversy over why Mockingbirds wing flash. But they do it no matter what we think.
Last year we had a nest in our Lacebark Elm. This year it is late to leaf, so they are in the Yaupon.
