Bergamo, or You can't spell Funiculare without Fun!

Bergamo is a quaint, picturesque mountain village surrounded by a city.

On our second day in Pilzone, we decided to make the drive up to see the old city.

We are pleased with the Google Maps lady, and she was able to get us there, through traffic and crazy small streets, with littlle problem.

And then we were able to drive straight to the parking garage (no more "car parks" for us post Brexit) and walk to the base of the Funicular.

We like Funiculars, and try to take them whenever afforded the opportunity.

It was small change, and then we were up in the old city.

Quite a view of the new city from there

It is a beautiful little city, a nice church and a big square.

Doreen is enamoured with these mountain villages. So much so that she has an idea in her head of the idealized mountain village. One in France, one in Italy, one is Spain, and one is Germany. Maybe some day we will retire to one of these places.

That's me in the big square.

The area around Bergamo grows a lot of corn, and they eat a lot of Polenta. (this caused Pellagra to be endemic in this area years ago. Not enough Niacin and Lysine.) But now it is a great treat.

We ate at a place called Il Circolino,  which is a cooperative that serves a lot of polenta.

We had plenty:

But we had pasta, too.

It was all delicious.

All the old churches in Italy have their relics.

Here are a bunch in Sta Maria Maggiorie:

Skulls.

Doreen is celebrating the big square here:

and lo and behold, there are TWO funiculars in Bergamo!

SO we took the second up to the castle.

and the little old Romanesque chapel next door:

They are crazy about lions and other animals at the base of their pillars in this part of Italy:

Doreen was enchanted by the sartorial choices of this fellow. Hard to see, but those are bright red boat shoes to go with his bright red shorts.

More churches

The had a meridian line in the main market square. I love these things. But we were not there at high noon, sadly.

More from that old church:

We enjoyed Bergamo.
